It is probably clear to you if you’ve been reading my blogs or listening to my podcast that I think cheerleading is the greatest sport in the world. Its just got so much to it – strength training, cardio, flexibility and community as a true team sport. And I think its awesome that it can be done as an adult for as long as you want to do it (and your body wants to do it). There are really 2 great options if you are an adult and want to cheer after high school or college is over – parent teams and open teams. Let’s dive in!

You may be asking yourself – what the heck is a parent team? Well, its almost exactly what it says it is. It’s generally a team in a gym that is composed of parents of kids in the gym. Sometimes coaches or other adults looking for a fun way to workout will also join. While some parent teams compete, some just perform at the gym showcase or smaller events. I did a parent team way back when, and it was super fun. We laughed, got in some exercise, and for a lot of the parents without cheer backgrounds, they had a better understanding of their kids’ love of the sport. All while getting a little bit fitter! Total win!

Now open teams are strictly about being competitive. They will practice the same number of hours as most elite teams, and compete throughout the season. Open teams can be tumbling or non-tumbling, have a higher minimum # of athletes required for the team, and can compete at All Star Worlds and The Cheerleading Worlds. While still fun, these teams are for serious athletes.

Are you considering checking one out…. I think you should! Most gyms will offer workouts that can be attended as a drop in so you can see what it’s going to be like. It is a great way to stay fit, to form a new tribe, and experience the amazing sport of cheerleading.

Until Next Time,
Coach Jill
